Janelle Bynum sworn-in as Representative for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTVZ) – Democrat Janelle Bynum was sworn-in Friday with her colleagues in the 119th U.S. Congress.
Representative Bynum was elected in November, defeating incumbent Republican Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who has been nominated as Secretary of Labor by President-Elect Trump.
According to the Oregon Capital Chronicle’s reporting, Bynum defeated Chavez-DeReamer by about 9,600 votes or 2.5 percentage points.
Rep. Bynum was recruited by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to take-on Chavez-DeRemer.
After being elected, Rep. Bynum made history as being the first African American to represent Oregon in Washington, D.C.
Oregon’s 5th Congressional District includes portions of Bend, Sisters, Portland and the Willamette Valley.
