Oregon’s 5th Congressional District candidates make final push ahead of election

CLACKAMAS COUNTY Ore. (KPTV) – With Election Day just around the corner, incumbent Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Democrat challenger Janelle Bynum spent Saturday on a final push to sway voters.

Chavez-DeRemer joined local carpenters’ union members in Oregon City canvassing for her campaign.

While speaking with the union, Chavez-DeRemer focused on economic growth and union support.

“We’re creating jobs, we’re protecting the prevailing wage, and we’re making sure we’re building here in Oregon,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “What we don’t want is people to pack up and walk out of this state.”

Meanwhile, Bynum, hosted her own canvassing event alongside Oregon congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici.

Speaking to volunteers, Bynum stressed the high stakes in the race.

“This election is about something very, very important,” Bynum said. “It’s about our lives, it’s about us having agency, it’s about us taking control of what we want our communities to look like.”

Having represented a politically mixed district in the state legislature for several years, Bynum is hopeful about her chances in a closely contested race.

“This is my fifth election,” Bynum said. “I’ve always represented a purple district, and our focus remains on driving turnout and connecting with voters on the issues.”
