Update: Quarter-sized hail expected with thunderstorms to hit Southwest Pa. Thursday

The National Weather Service issued an updated severe thunderstorm warning at 8:50 p.m. on Thursday in effect until 9:30 p.m. for Allegheny, Beaver and Washington counties.

The storms are packing quarter-sized hail (1 inch).

“At 8:50 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 6 miles north of Wintersville, or 8 miles northwest of Steubenville, moving east at 50 mph,” states the weather service. “Damage to vehicles is expected.”

Locations impacted by the warning include Pittsburgh, Ross Township, McCandless Township, Moon Township, Weirton, Franklin Park, Aliquippa, Robinson Township, Economy, Bellevue, Kennedy Township, Ambridge, Stowe Township, McKees Rocks, Crafton, Coraopolis, Toronto, Avalon, Sewickley and Ingram.

According to the weather service, “Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows. This storm is capable of producing large hail.”
