A winter weather advisory is in effect for southwest Iowa, including Cass County, until mid-Saturday morning as freezing rain is expected across the area this (Friday) afternoon into the overnight hours Saturday.
Travel could become hazardous with icy roadways.
The National Weather Service issused the winter weather advisory for freezing rain, to be effective from 4 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Saturday. All of western Iowa, including Aududon, Guthrie and Adair counties, have the same expiry time, although Pottawattamie and Shelby counties the advisory goes into effect at 2 p.m.
Ice amounts generally are expected to be highest north of Interstate 80, with Cass County forecasted to have about 0.05-inch and areas south of there about that same amount or less.
Areas in the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Grinnell area are under an ice storm warning, as amounts could approach three-tenths of an inch.
Branches and power lines may become ice-coated, and winds of 10-20 mph could cause tree limbs to break and power outages to occur.
Generally, the rain should approach Cass County around 4 p.m., according to a timing map by the NWS, the Des Moines area by 6 p.m. and eastern Iowa by 10 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to warm overnight to above freezing, as the rain turns to liquid rain. The highs on Saturday are expected to be around 39 degrees.
