Highlights

• Tropical Cyclone Chido made landfall in the district of Mecufi, Cabo Delgado province, in the morning of 15 December 2024.

• Around 2 million people have been identified as at risk of the cyclone, with 627,000 people identified as high risk, and 1.4 million people at moderate risk.

• Government meteorological updates also highlight potential impacts on river basins, roads, power electricity poles and health infrastructure, necessitating immediate preparedness and response actions.

• Districts currently at highest risk are Mecufi, Chiure, Metuge, Pemba, Namuno, Montepuez and Ancuabe in Cabo Delgado; and Memba, Nacaroa and Erati in Nampula province.

• Early warning message dissemination and voluntary evacuation instructions started on December 8th in Nampula and 12 December in Pemba, reaching over 400,000 people in all impacted districts, as part of the activation of the Anticipatory Action Plan.

• In less than 24 hours, WFP’s emergency food assistance has been delivered to approximately 500 cyclone-affected families in temporary accommodation centres in Pemba.

• In Nampula (Mogincual), food was provided in temporary accommodation centres under the AA activation by INGD with WFP support.

• Multi sectoral assessments are planned for Mecufi and Chiure districts in Cabo Delgado.
